Supervised Classification of Early Perceptual Structure in Dot Patterns*

A supervised algorithm for computing perceptual groupings in dot patterns is presented. The algorithm uses shape features of the polygons in the Voronoi tessellation of the input pattern. The training patterns identified b y humans are used to obtain an initial noncontextual classification which is then refined b y a probabilistic relaxation labeling.

Compositionality for perceptual classification

We compare three approaches to compositional semantics for words that are modeled (in part) using perceptual classifiers: ”meanings as sets”, ”meanings as transparent functions”, and ”meanings as opaque functions”. The approaches are evaluated according to whether they fulfill a set of desiderata, including dealing with non-intersective compositionality, working with state of the art classifier...

Perceptual classification of chromatic modulation.

We measured the regions of the equiluminant plane that are exploited by observers during a Yes/No detection task. The signal was a 640-ms Gaussian modulation (sigma(t) = 160 ms) of a Gaussian spatial patch (sigma(s) = 2.4 deg) presented in chromatically bivariate uniform noise. One component of the noise was along the direction axial with the signal in color space, the other perpendicular. Four...

Perceptual learning and free classification.

Two experiments are reported that investigate the effects of stimulus preexposure on discrimination performance in a free classification task, using adult humans as subjects. In free classification subjects are asked to put stimuli into groups in any way that seems reasonable or sensible to them. Experiment 1 shows that the effect of preexposure is contingent on stimulus structure. Experiment 1...

Perceptual Classification in a Rapidly Changing Environment

Humans and monkeys can learn to classify perceptual information in a statistically optimal fashion if the functional groupings remain stable over many hundreds of trials, but little is known about categorization when the environment changes rapidly. Here, we used a combination of computational modeling and functional neuroimaging to understand how humans classify visual stimuli drawn from categ...
